Aggregates are a strategic material for development, without which our day-to-day life as we know it would not be possible. They are the second most widely consumed natural resource in the world, after water.
Aggregate extractors meet society's demand for aggregates. In the Basque Country that demand exceeds 9 tonnes per person per annum.
There is currently no alternative to limestone aggregates as a raw material.
The members of the three associations in the federation (ASECABI, ASFARGI and ASECAL) produced 17 million tonnes of aggregates – equivalent to 95% of the total output of the Basque Country – and turns over around €150 million per annum.
The members of the associations in the federation provide jobs directly for 800 people, and indirectly for a further 2400. The knock-on effects of the industry extend to tens of thousands of jobs in other sectors.
